Michael Salter
Michael Salter’s work examines reductive visual language (the
image) and its affect on the cognitive process (the mind). He researches
all sources of mass communication and their massive volume of content.
The work is intimately linked to consumer economy, where representation,
image and response motivate an audience. Salter pulls images, symbols,
logos, and objects from our everyday, re-inventing and manipulating
them to make the familiar seem uncanny. Salter’s communication
is based on graphic images, kinetic sculptures and installations
inspired by the logos he invents. He often uses environmentally
unfriendly – throwaway – synthetic materials that are
typically discarded by consumers. Finally, the duchampian ready-made
theory employs the absurdity of contemporary, consumer oriented
– lifestyles where overconsumption of images generates unexpected
meanings.
